Look for individuals or firms that adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct – such as that of the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (http://www.napia.com). Also check your State’s Department of Insurance, or comparable regulatory agency, to ensure the adjuster is licensed. Review any contract carefully and make note of the time available to rescind if you change your mind. Ask your prospective adjuster for references from former clients.
